WATERFORD DEVELOPMENT WELCOMES FALLS CHURCH CITY OFFICIALS TO SPECTRUM’S NEW GREEN ROOF

Reston, Va. – Reinforcing a promise it made to bring an environmentally-friendly condominium to the City of Falls Church, Waterford Development LLC recently hosted a unique tour for city officials atop the “green” roof of one of its newest projects, Spectrum. The rooftop is one of the first of its kind in Falls Church, and will benefit the environment and further support recent green building efforts being made throughout the homebuilding industry.

Approximately twenty-five city and community leaders experienced Spectrum’s EnviroTech Roof System firsthand and discovered how it works. Essentially, drought resistant, low water consuming sedum plants grow in a specially designed planting medium on top of Spectrum’s conventional flat roof. The rooftop vegetation provides thermal insulation for reduced energy consumption, filters stormwater run-off before it is returned to the environment, increases sound insulation for the Spectrum residents and protects the building’s roof, so that roofing materials are replaced less often, thus reducing the burden on existing landfills. In addition, the “green” system turns the asphalt roof into an ecologically and visually attractive open space.

“We are pleased to see the completion of Spectrum’s new green roof,” said President and CEO of Waterford Development Jan A. Zachariasse. “It was important to showcase the new rooftop for key Falls Church officials and emphasize that Waterford is committed to building quality condominiums while maintaining respect for the environment.”

The eco-friendly rooftop was designed by Building Logics of Virginia Beach, Va. Building Logics is dedicated to providing green roofing technology and systems to the homebuilding industry.
